Dear Friends,
Like you, we love Nature, we love life and all animals, we love forests and oceans.
WILDLIFE IS DISAPPEARING around the world, in the oceans and on land. In the past few years, animal declines (including insects) have been clearly documented around the globe, including Europe, North America, neotropical countries and even the High Arctic. The world’s wildlife populations have fallen by 70%. We are in an age of extinction and defaunation. We are not only losing the rarest or cutest, but losing the common and the widespread species.
The amount of money that governments use to subsidize fossil fuels or build bombs is crying betrayal of humanity’s priorities like saving Nature and ensuring a living planet for current and future generations. Meanwhile conservation is living off scraps in comparison, and nature is being put to the sword.
We must protect 30% of the oceans by 2030. We must protect 50% of rainforest by 2030. We are frantically running out of time to turn this around. It is time we put rainforests, oceans, animals, and life first.
We waged key battles in 2023 on protecting and restoring rainforests, cleaning up ocean, saving and restoring coral reefs, protecting 231 endangered species in the field where it is urgently needed, and supporting indigenous peoples and local communities to secure their rights and effectively manage their natural lands. Under their stewardship, forests are better protected and deforestation and degradation are lower. ESI will continue to intensify its strong support to indigenous peoples to receive the necessary resources to secure their rights and effectively manage their ancestral lands.
We can do the urgent work together without relying on repeated unrealized promises from governments. In the last 15 years, Endangered Species International did not fall short in protecting endangered animals and plants, rainforest and ocean. With your support, we will continue to advance our conservation work on the ground.
Our goal is to double the number of real protected areas (ocean and land) we have created in the last 15 years and to manage them the with real enforcement and local involvement. It is hard work of creating and maintaining effective conservation projects: endless meetings, buying boats or infrared cameras, educating people, paying for salaries so we can patrol and monitor the area to ensure it protects animals and ecosystems. These protections allow all life forms to regenerate and increase the amount and diversity of all animals in the protected areas, while still allowing indigenous tribes to thrive. Absorbing huge amounts of greenhouse gases, protected areas are one of the most effective tools we have in tackling the climate crisis.
In coming year filled with challenges, your generous support to wildlife, nature, and people around the world is the backbone of our group. More than ever, we are truly thankful to you.
Thank you for being the voice for animals and plants, thank you for joining us.
